As the luxury arm of Nissan, Infiniti has a good reputation for producing notable models backed by a decent factory warranty. The limited warranty offers standard coverage for most parts you’ll find on a new Infiniti, but there are some exceptions you should know about before deciding on whether to buy a new vehicle from the automaker.

Don’t just rely on the factory warranty. New or used, there’s a great extended warranty with one of these providers:

What IS Included

The Infiniti factory warranty has a few different coverages that overlap, so nearly every part on a vehicle is included.

Bumper-to-Bumper

The main portion of the overall factory warranty is the four-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. This warranty is meant to cover the majority of parts on a new Infiniti vehicle, literally from one bumper to another. As a result, it is most likely the warranty that will save you the most money if factory defects come up during the first few years of the vehicle’s life.

The comprehensive warranty includes components on both the interior and exterior of each vehicle. Common systems and parts include things like navigation, climate control, engine components, and more. As an exclusionary type of coverage, the warranty leaves off particular components like wear items, seat belts, and some specialized components found in the drivetrain.

Powertrain

The powertrain warranty lasts a total of six years or 70,000 miles. Unlike the comprehensive warranty, the powertrain coverage is focused on specific drivetrain components and systems like the engine, transmission, and drive axles that keep the car moving.

Since the warranty lasts longer than the comprehensive warranty, you will have a couple of extra years of coverage before needing to consider an extended warranty or protection plan. This is also the warranty that tends to apply the most when major issues develop with the engine or drivetrain in the first few years of a vehicle’s life.

Extras

Life other factory warranties, the Infiniti coverage includes a few extra warranties and perks that kick in when the bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties don’t apply. The majority of the extra warranties are limited to specific issues and uses, such as the corrosion coverage that lasts for seven years and unlimited miles. There is also an emission control coverage that lasts for five years and 50,000 miles. Other warranties include a federal emission performance warranty, a genuine Infiniti accessories basic coverage, the 60,000-mile California emission performance warranty, the 70,000-mile California emission long term defect warranty, and the optional Infiniti Elite extended protection plan.

Besides the extra warranties, the bulk of the additional perks is made up of the basic roadside assistance program. Under this, emergency services like jump-starts, free towing, and flat tire solutions are offered if an issue (caused by a factory defect) leaves you potentially stranded on the road. Infiniti also offers some basic trip interruption benefits in case an overnight stay is required due to repairs.

What’s NOT Included

While the main comprehensive and powertrain warranties cover a lot, the factory warranty does have a few limitations that reduce the money-saving value of the coverage.

Maintenance Coverage

When it comes to reducing the costs of typical maintenance services that can plague the total ownership experience, the factory warranty doesn’t offer much coverage. Since issues are limited to factory defects, there is a good chance you’ll need to pay for maintenance services yourself or simply do some of the work yourself if you have the experience and skills.

Incidental Damage

Additional protections are lacking with the factory warranty, especially when it comes to incidental damage. In other words, the factory warranty won’t cover warranty repairs caused by accidental damage, vandalism, bad weather, or general wear and tear. Like the lack of maintenance cover, the work needed to repair such damage will cost extra.

The Good

The Infinity warranty has a few standout benefits that put it above some manufacturer’s warranties. While it’s not the longest or most extensive warranty available, it does edge out the industry standard of three years/36,000 miles and five years/60,000 miles for bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties respectively. This means you’ll get a little bit of extra coverage over other automakers before needing to consider an extended service contract.

The roadside assistance program is also a notable perk. Although it’s limited to factory-defect-related issues, it still has the promise of getting you out of a pinch if necessary. Combined with the trip interruption benefits, it also offers some money-saving value if a long road trip is blindsided.

The Bad

While the factory warranty offers a lot of basic coverage for factory defects, it leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to other issues and common wear and tear. There isn’t much money-saving value you should expect after the initial new vehicle delivery, which can limit the positive service experience you’ll get from Infiniti at times.

Specifically, the lack of any major kind of maintenance program is a drawback of the warranty. With maintenance services being needed on a regular basis, such costs can quickly add up. Without a basic maintenance program, you should expect to foot the bill for these costs unless you have another service contract.

Takeaway Value

Between basic part replacements and complimentary courtesy vehicles, luxury warranties tend to stand out from the crowded field. Infiniti’s warranty offers some of these standout features, but it’s not the best. So, what’s the real value of the peace of mind you should expect from an Infiniti warranty? The basic protection you get if any factory-related issues actually arise.
