What IS Included
Land Rover’s factory warranty lasts four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Typically, automakers include two types of coverage in their basic warranty: bumper-to-bumper protection and powertrain protection. Land Rover lumps both types into one.
Land Rover’s warranty covers nearly everything on your SUV, from its front to rear, both inside and out. As long as a problem is related to bad materials or workmanship, the component(s) is warrantable.
When it comes to rust perforation, the corrosion perforation warranty lasts for six years or unlimited mileage. If a defect causes a rust hole in the vehicle’s body, you’re covered. However, surface corrosion due to stone chips or scratches on paintwork are not covered.
Land Rover’s federal emission control system warranty covers problems that interfere with EPA regulations. Most components in the emissions system are covered for eight years or 80,000 miles.
The new vehicle limited warranty is transferable to a subsequent owner.
Added Perks
During a vehicle disablement, Land Rover owners have access to 24-hour roadside assistance, which aids with battery jump starts, flat tires, fuel delivery, and key lockouts. The service also provides towing to the nearest Land Rover retailer as well as trip-interruption benefits, which reimburses owners if their vehicle is disabled more than 50 miles from home.
The automaker also has a Retailer Mobile Technician Program in which a specially designed vehicle and a Land Rover technician will assist during a vehicle breakdown. However, this service is not available in all areas.
What’s NOT Included
Most limited warranties feature a set of exclusions or items that are not covered. Land Rover’s new vehicle limited warranty doesn’t cover wear and tear, routine maintenance, or damage caused by accidents. Items such as wiper blades, brake pads, and oil filters are excluded.
Land Rover does not cover tires. Instead, they are covered by the tire manufacturer if there’s a defect in materials and workmanship. Tires are not covered if they are damaged by a road hazard.
In addition, the Land Rover factory warranty does not cover environmental damage, which includes acid rain, bird droppings, tree sap, and UV damage. Cosmetic problems such as door dings are also excluded.
While Land Rover’s coverage term is longer than the industry standard of three years, 36,000 miles, most vehicle limited warranties include a separate, longer coverage period for the powertrain, something Land Rover does not do.
The powertrain is made up of the engine, transmission/transaxle, and drivetrain. Instead of offering lengthier protection for these essential components, Land Rover’s warranty encompasses all vehicle components for just four years or 50,000 miles. In contrast, a carmaker such as Acura has a six-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty.
The Good
Land Rover’s factory warranty is pretty standard in its offerings; however, its bumper-to-bumper coverage is longer in duration compared to what many manufacturers provide. It offers an additional one year or 14,000 miles of coverage over the industry norm.
Overall, its coverage is fairly comprehensive, and it’s long enough to take care of most factory defects, which tend to occur during the first few years of a vehicle’s service life. It’s also beneficial that the warranty is transferable to a new owner, which can increase the SUV’s resale value.
Finally, Land Rover provides roadside assistance, which is helpful if you’re stranded during a road trip. It also provides some trip-interruption benefits that include financial reimbursement.
The Bad
One of the biggest drawbacks with Land Rover’s warranty is that it doesn’t include longer-lasting powertrain coverage, even though it’s standard practice to provide lengthier protection for the engine, transmission, and drivetrain. So, unless you purchase an extended warranty, your SUV’s powertrain coverage ends after four years or 50,000 miles.
Another downside is that Land Rover’s coverage of warrantable repairs is pretty basic. It doesn’t include many extra perks or benefits compared to some other automakers. And considering that it’s a luxury sport-utility vehicle brand, you’d expect it would provide services such as rental car reimbursement and concierge service. Instead, it’s similar to what you get with most other automakers.
Takeaway Value
Land Rover’s new vehicle limited warranty provides coverage that will protect your SUV if it experiences any defects in the first few years of service life, which can provide some peace of mind. However, the factory warranty is pretty basic, and it’s something you can get through nearly any automaker.
If you’re set on getting a Range Rover, Discovery, or Defender and don’t mind basic car warranty coverage with a short powertrain duration, then you’re all set. However, if you want better coverage, you may want to research other luxury SUV brands to find one with a better warranty.
