The Good

While we find the different length options to be somewhat limited in usefulness, it’s nice to see Mercedes-Benz giving options for its customers to choose from when buying an extended warranty plan. All vehicles are different, even those from the same manufacturer, so the available options make it easier to tailor the coverage to the vehicle’s needs.

The company also simplifies the coverage with its singular extension approach. There have been some complaints over the lack of a true powertrain warranty, but overall this approach simplifies buying an extended warranty. All you have to do is pick the desired length and you’re good to go. 

Finally, the warranty favors heavy-use drivers who take their vehicles on the road a lot. The 75,000- and 100,000-mile options can almost double the coverage for any vehicle over 100,000 miles on the odometer. 

The Bad

The main limited warranty coverage of Mercedes-Benz’s simple singular approach to its extended warranties is what you have to sacrifice for the simplicity. There are a few added benefits you get with a traditional bumper-to-bumper and powertrain setup, especially when it comes to the length of the warranty coverage itself.

Most powertrain warranties, for example, last around four or five years before expiring. Since the extended warranty only goes up to three years, you won’t get as much time with the extended warranty coverage before it expires, especially if you tend to hold onto your vehicle for years or decades at a time. 

There is also a slight mismatch between the time and distance options customers can pick. The 75,000- and 100,000-mile options are almost unnecessary if you don’t average over 25,000 miles each year with your vehicle within the one- to three-year timeframe.

We consider the Mercedes-Benz extended warranty program to be a step up from any automaker that just offers a simple extension on its factory coverage. You get more car warranty options and additional coverage options/perks like basic roadside assistance.
