The 1967 Mazda Cosmo usually comes up in the context of early rotary cars, but it really is simply a spectacular triumph of design regardless of its powerplant.

The short story is that the Japanese automaker started developing rotary engine tech in 1961, announced the Cosmo Sport at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show, and finally offered it up for sale on May 30, 1967. “At the time, the Mazda Cosmo Sport was the only sports car of its kind, and sold around 30 units per month,” the automaker’s site states. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that these cars are extremely rare today.
