There are so many different considerations before you hit purchase that it can become a daunting task. To alleviate some of the stress of such a purchase, we’ve put together a buying guide of our favorites, as well as what you should look out for and consider.
Best Amp Wiring Kit Reviews & Recommendations
This kit was designed by professional audio installers along with sound engineers, with authenticity and simplicity in mind. Many of the wires included have transparent insulation, specifically so that one can see how many wires are in the insulation, how large those wires really are, and which wire goes where.
With nickel-plated connections, and oxygen-free copper wiring, this kit will keep your signal free of distortion caused by corrosion, keeping your sound quality high, while ensuring your wires last a long time. The flexible wiring keeps individual strands inside from snapping, and they are longer than most kits, so as to give you the length necessary for a full four-door install in even a large vehicle. Some of the wires are also silver-tinned for extra resistance to breaking down. They are on the pricier side, however.
- Brand NVX
- Model FBA_XKIT42
- Weight 6.3 pounds
Corrosion-resistant fasteners and wire
Extra length allows easy install in all vehicles
Flexible wire to keep strands from snapping and reducing signal quality
A bit pricier than the value kits
This amp wiring kit from InstallGear is definitely budget-friendly, though that is reflected in the quality of materials. It uses copper-clad aluminum wiring, with extra large wires, for a better signal transfer, but only includes enough speaker wire for approximately two speakers, at only 17 feet long. This means that this will not cover all the speakers in larger audio systems, or larger vehicles.
Sacrificing some quality with lower-end materials, however, is used to keep the price low, which it absolutely does. And while this kit may not perform as well as some others, it will perform better than most other budget options on the market and when you’re starting your audio journey, inexpensive and pretty good are good to have together.
- Brand InstallGear
- Model IG4AKR
- Weight 2.55 pounds
Very budget-friendly
Larger than usual CCA wires increase fidelity over other CCA
Cheap materials means less quality than higher-end kits
Short speaker wire leaves less room for error when installing
Will not cover all speakers in the vehicle
The Rockford Fosgate name is well known among vehicle audio enthusiasts, and has been for years. The brand makes a good product, and people buy it, as reflected in the higher price than others on this list. Most importantly, you are getting what you paid for. Using oxygen-free copper with a thick exterior sheath keeps your connections strong and the elements from corroding the wire.
This kit will handle most of folks’ needs, so long as that need is for a kit for a car or small truck and the lengths necessary for a large SUV aren’t included. And you’ll likely need to purchase more kits to fill out such vehicles. However, the audio quality from this wiring kit will surprise nobody who’s used Rockford before, as it offers premium sound. But it’s expensive and really for those who have no problem paying extra for the company’s fidelity and power.
- Brand Rockford Fosgate
- Model RFK4D
- Weight 7.6 pounds
High quality wiring, with full American wire gauge thickness
Oxygen-free copper and thick sheathing means your wires won’t be a failure point
Excellent sound quality
Much pricier kit than the others
May not have enough wire length for your vehicle
We chose this kit from LeigesAudio for its light weight and low cost. This is a kit that does exactly what it promises and not much more. While it won’t funnel tons of power through your vehicle’s audio system, it’s certainly enough for most setups. The signal is carried by oxygen-free copper, while power is transmitted along 4 gauge copper-clad aluminum cabling.
In the kit, you’ll get 17 feet of the 4-gauge wiring, along with another 17 feet of 16-gauge wiring, as well as a 80-amp fuse, all the ties, looms and terminals needed, and another 17 feet of 18-gauge wire. It’s also one of the lightest kits on this list, which makes for easier installation. There are some issues, though. The power cable is thinner than most, which may lead to power issues down the road.
- Brand LEIGESAUDIO
- Model 4GA Amp Kit
- Weight 3.41 pounds
Low cost
Flexible cables
Lightweight
CCA power cables smaller than competing kits
Lower power transmission
The Stinger kit is intended to provide all the power to your amp that you’ll ever need for a higher-end output. This wiring kit comes with full oxygen-free copper wiring, with power provided through fully 1/0 AWG cables, more than enough to power a big subwoofer. Just note that this kit does not come with speaker wire or RCA cable. You will need to add those after the fact, unlike with other kits.
And while this kit lacks some of the features of other wiring kits on this list and available online, namely the speaker and RCA wires, but is cheaper because for it, freeing up funds for you to choose your own speaker and RCA cabling. That said, it’s not as cheap as we’d expect and adding those speaker and RCA cables are going to push this closer to the edge of most budgets.
- Brand Stinger
- Model SK4201
- Weight 2.4 pounds
Pure tin-coated oxygen-free copper
1/0 AWG power cables
Lightweight
Lacks speaker wire and RCA cable to complete a subwoofer install
Expensive for not being a full kit
This wiring kit from Elite Audio is so over-the-top, for those just looking to lightly upgrade their audio kit, you probably don’t need this. However, if your goal is to install a massive subwoofer and a huge amplifier, this may be exactly what you need. Seriously, even the speaker wires on this kit are oversized as where most speaker wire is 16 or 18 AWG, this one has a long 20 feet of 12 AWG wire and the fuse on this kit is 250 amps.
Relative to the other kits, this one is up there in price, and for good reason. The total weight for this behemoth of audio is nearly 12 pounds of pure copper. It comes with copper terminals, ferrules, heat-shrink tubing, and zip ties to complete any install. That said, all that weight adds, well, weight. And weight hurts your economy and could mean you need additional bracing in your doors.
- Brand Elite Audio
- Model EA-PROK0
- Weight 11.82 pounds
Huge cables throughout
Will not be the weak point in your audio setup
Will give you superb sound out of high-end speakers and amplifiers
Quite expensive
Heavy as a tank
How We Selected the Best Amp Wiring Kits
While researching this article, we considered things like the product’s price, the abilities of the wiring included, fuse amperage, length of the wires included, and what makes up those wires and connectors. We wanted to find an array of both pricing and options for you, the consumer, to be more informed should you decide to find an amp wiring kit for your own vehicle, and to help keep you from making a mistake during your purchase.
Our product selections, rankings, and awards for this story are based on research. While we haven’t conducted real-world testing on all of these products yet, we’ve looked at consumer testimonials and data, tutorials, and general discussions on social media and in forums. We also consider price and specification in the context of the segment. And, of course, we rely on our institutional knowledge of the automotive landscape to weed out weak products.
Buying Guide/What to Look For
While looking for amp wiring kits, some of the things you’ll need to pay close attention to are the wire gauges, which standard the wires follow (international is smaller), and length of the wires included and ensuring they will even reach your components properly.
Another big part of any wiring kit is the fuse and its amperage. Ensuring you have a quality fuse that can also handle enough power without blowing is tantamount. The last big thing to consider is the makeup of the wiring itself as oxygen-free copper is better than copper-clad aluminum, which is cheaper but also does a weaker job in every category.
What to Consider When Buying Amp Wiring Kits
Types of Wire
Oxygen-Free Copper
Oxygen-free copper will resist corrosion better due to the removal of oxygen from between the wire and its protective sleeve, which is better for signal and power transmission.
Copper-Clad Aluminum
An aluminum core wire surrounded by stranded copper that makes for a cheaper alternative to pure copper/oxygen-free copper wire.
Key Features
Wiring Length and Gauge
The basic premise of an amp is to send more power and stronger signals to your speakers. To do so means you need bigger gauge wire than what comes in the car. Skimping here is like having a Jacuzzi that you only fill with a small squirt gun. You won’t be able to make the most of the rest of your audio system if you make all the pipes tiny. The lower the gauge number, the bigger the wire.
Fuse Amperage
Each and every amp wiring kit should come with a fuse as the fuse keeps your wires from being overloaded. The fuse cuts off the power supply before too much power is forced from the battery, through the amp, and to the speakers that destroys them.
Tips and Tricks
As with something you do for decades upon decades, you pick up a few tips and tricks along the way in terms of selecting the right product, and/or using it. That’s the case with us and amp kits. To help you bridge the information gap, here’s a selection of what we’ve learned along the way.
- Use oxygen-free copper as much as possible.
- If an in-line fuse is not manufactured by the wiring kit company, check reviews of that fuse on its own.
- When installing, ensure you clean the spot where you install the ground wire to the vehicle body.
- Look at both the good reviews and the bad to see if the bad ones are misinformed one-offs.
- 1/0 gauge wire isn’t 1 gauge or 0 gauge, it means it is single-zero gauge, or single aught (0) gauged wire. 00 wire would be 2/0.
FAQs
Generally, you’ll want 1/0 AWG wire for this application.
If your amp can handle 1,000W, you want a 100A fuse in your kit. For 2,500W, you will need a 250A fuse.
No, but it is cheaper.
Nothing negative will happen, but it will cost more, be heavier, and may not fit through openings or into the connectors you need to use.
Wiring kits can be under $50, but the quality will suffer. You should expect to spend a bit over $100 on a decent amp wiring kit.
Final Thoughts
We really like the NVX 4-Gauge Car Amp Install Kit for its balance of price and quality, as well as the fact that it was, in part, designed by installers, not just engineers. Wiring is an important piece of the vehicle audio component, and shouldn’t be skimped on too much. If you disagree, let us know in the comments below.
