Best Ratcheting Screwdriver Buying Guide
Looking for a new tool for your tool box can be a little overwhelming when there are so many different brands on the market. In this buying guide we cover what you should look for when buying a good quality ratchet screwdriver and we compare ratcheting screwdrivers to standard screwdrivers to see how different they really are.
Keep reading to find out more…
What to Look for in a Ratchet Screwdriver
There are several things you should consider when looking to buy a ratchet screwdriver. Here are the most important things:
- Quality
Here’s the deal; you really get what you pay for when it comes to tools. If you opt for the cheapest then you’re not going to get the very best quality. We have included some very reasonably priced ratcheting screwdriver sets on our list, some are as little as $20. These are fine if you are only planning on using the tools occasionally, but if you are a professional or regularly use your tools for DIY repairs and projects, then buy the best quality you can afford.
- Size
A small “stubby” screwdriver is perfect for confined spaces and tight spots and if you are looking for a handy tool for those such places then opt for a ratchet screwdriver with a smaller handle. If you’re looking for a screwdriver for general use then make sure that you buy a tool that will sit in your hand comfortably.
- Handle
One of the most important features of a screwdriver. If the handle isn’t comfortable then you are going to get fatigued hands and even blisters, depending on the task. Look for a screwdriver with an ergonomic handle, something that has been designed with comfort in mind and that is easy to grip.
- Compatibility
If you already have bits and would like to use them with a new ratchet handle then you need to make sure that the two are compatible – otherwise you’ll have a useless product. Check bit sizes and compatibility before buying.
- Magnetic
This is a matter of taste really, but some people prefer drivers with magnetic tips whereas others prefer the bits to snap into place. Magnetic tips can be super handy as not only does it mean that changing bits is fast and easy, but the screws stay in place too and you don’t lose them. If the magnetic connection is too weak then you will have a weak tool – this is the downside. Read the reviews, check to see if your product offers a warranty and always buy good quality.
Ratchet Screwdriver vs Standard Screwdriver
Let’s look at the differences between a standard screwdriver and a ratchet screwdriver and talk about how they work…
- Standard Screwdriver
Standard screwdrivers come in a variety of lengths and sizes and the shape at the end determines whether it’s a slotted, flared or flat screwdriver. These tools are operated manually and simply slot into the screw, the user then turns the handle repeatedly to either loosen or tighten the screw. These types of screwdrivers are often used for DIY jobs and opening tins of paint (not advisable!) and the most common size is between 5.5mm – 8mm wide. It’s easy to get arm and hand fatigue using these types of screwdrivers as you are almost fully turning your wrist whilst applying pressure with every turn. Also it’s common for the driver to slip out and scratch your work surface or your hand!
- Ratchet Screwdriver
These types of screwdrivers take the pressure off turning as they use a type of technology called a ratchet which allows a moving part of a tool to only move one way with any torque. This means that when you turn the handle in one direction it moves freely in the other direction. This means that you don’t have to keep fully turning your wrist and you also don’t have to move the bit into the screw head at the end of each turn. A ratchet screwdriver is therefore more comfortable to use, and much faster.

What is a Ratcheting Screwdriver?
This type of screwdriver using a ratchet mechanism which means that the tool will only allow force in one direction whilst at the same time, move freely in the other direction. It’s a more comfortable way of using a screwdriver as you never have to fully turn your wrist and apply pressure like you do with a standard screwdriver. These screwdrivers are particularly useful in tight spots and confined spaces where you don’t have the space to find the screw head after each turn.
Our Top Pick
Our favorite product from the list was the Klein Tools Screwdriver and Nut Driver 11-1 Multi-Tool. The company was established in 1857 and has been producing quality tools since then. The company’s reputation is second to none and we feel that this product reflects their attention to detail. This is a versatile tool with a driver shaft that can hold 8 x popular tips and converts to three nut driver sizes. It’s fast and easy to change the bits and the set contains industrial strength buts that have been heat treated for extra strength and durability.
