Ford’s new vehicle limited warranty includes both bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage for new cars, SUVs, and trucks. The powertrain warranty covers components for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. It’s longer than the company’s bumper-to-bumper warranty of three years or 36,000 miles, but this is a common practice among automakers.
While Ford’s powertrain coverage is adequate, it’s far from the best in the industry. Some automakers such as Hyundai and Kia provide as much as 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain protection.

What IS Included
Ford’s powertrain warranty is rather standard and covers most of the parts related to a vehicle’s engine, transmission, and drivetrain.
It covers the following engine components (as well as some others): internal lubricated parts, cylinder block, cylinder heads, engine mounts, flywheel, injection pump, fuel pump, manifold, oil pump, oil pan, seals and gaskets, engine thermostat, engine thermostat housing, timing chain cover, timing chain, turbocharger/supercharger unit, valve covers, and water pump.
As for the transmission, Ford covers all internal parts, clutch cover, seals and gaskets, torque converter, transfer case, transmission case, and transmission mounts.
When it comes to the drivetrain, Ford covers axle shafts, seals and gaskets, velocity joints, and bearings on all front-, rear-, four-, and all-wheel drive vehicles, as well as parts specific to particular vehicles, including the driveshaft, drive axle housing, center support bearing, and final drive housing.
In addition, the company provides a five-year, 100,000-mile diesel engine warranty for all of its diesel trucks.
Other
Ford also provides roadside service assistance for five years or 60,000 miles as part of its factory warranty. It kicks in at the warranty start date and covers towing to the nearest dealership, flat tire changes, fuel delivery, jump starts, lock-out assistance, and winch-out services.
What’s NOT Included
Similar to other factory powertrain warranties, Ford has some exclusions. Unless a problem is related specifically to a factory defect, you will be required to pay for services and repairs.
Incidental Damage
If your vehicle is damaged during a collision or something hits the vehicle, the warranty will not kick in. If you drive through water that’s deep enough to penetrate the engine, the automaker won’t cover it. Weather-related issues (i.e., earthquakes or lightning), vandalism, and fire are also excluded from the warranty.
The new vehicle limited warranty does not cover any damage caused by alteration or modification, such as the use of a non-Ford Motor Company part or software. This includes performance-enhancing powertrain components or software and performance “chips.”
Maintenance Coverage
Services such as oil changes are necessary to keep your vehicle running at its optimal performance, and these maintenance costs can add up if you stick with the recommended service schedule. However, Ford doesn’t cover oil changes or the corresponding filter, oils, lubricants, or other fluids, which are necessary for good engine health.
The Good
Once the bumper-to-bumper warranty expires on new Ford cars and trucks, the powertrain warranty stays in effect for a couple more years and/or several thousand miles. Factory defects can be expensive, so the remaining coverage can be very helpful should an unexpected problem arise.
Also, Ford includes a warranty specifically geared towards diesel engines that is lengthier than the base powertrain warranty.
Finally, the powertrain warranty runs concurrently with roadside assistance. Should you unexpectedly break down, the automaker will step in and help with basic service needs.
The Bad
The worst thing about Ford’s powertrain warranty is its exclusions. And while it’s routine for most automakers to withhold coverage related to accidents, flooding, vandalism, etc., these types of incidents are not uncommon. Instead, you’ll need to rely on a third-party warranty plan or auto repair insurance to take care of any problems related to these types of situations.
Takeaway Value
While Ford’s powertrain warranty doesn’t stand out when it comes to the coverage itself or the length of protection, it is on par with the industry standard. If you want a Ford, you will be adequately covered should a defect occur, which can provide you with some peace of mind.
If you think the warranty is lacking, you may want to compare it to other warranties that, at the very least, may provide coverage that’s longer in duration.
