Big city street parkers never cease to amaze.

While taking the scenic route on a recent walk through Chicago’s south loop neighborhood, I encountered two very different ideas of how to spend and flaunt wealth. On a street lined with beautiful townhomes, a $155,000-plus Apocalypse Hellfire 6×6 was street parked across from a Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Seeing any 6×6 on the street will always stop me in my tracks, but the accompanying 911 made me think on it longer than usual. Who were these people? Were they car friends? Do they hate each other? Was it the same person?

The juxtaposition of styles was so stark, yet they accomplish a similar purpose of flashing disposable income. It almost felt like good and evil, or yin and yang. People debate what the perfect two-car garage would be, and this is certainly an option that’s never crossed my mind (if the 6×6 could even fit in the garage).

Although the 911 is a far more subtle vehicle than a 6×6, it’s bright yellow paint makes it extremely visible and ostentatious. Yet it looks almost subtle and insignificant next to a massive modified Jeep that’s wearing angry eyes, massive knobby tires, and a stealthy all-black suit. Two ideas of power, two ideas of braggadocious specialty vehicles, two ideas of what’s worthy of tens of thousands of dollars, and one place to park: the street.
