It can be tough to get some solid, up-close shots at various racetracks around the country. Without proper press credentials (the kind that requires insurance coverage, or the kind that’s just an orange vest) getting nice shots that convey action on track is tricky. But some tracks are easier than others, particularly older tracks like Laguna Seca.

For this event I shot a few years back, I wasn’t able to obtain proper photog credentials. At Laguna Seca, there are holes and gaps in the fencing for corner workers, as well as sometimes spectators. If you have the right angle and the right lens, you can actually use the fencing to your advantage and create some cool framing. Like this shot that covers Turn 3 at the historic track.
This was during an SCCA/PCA race weekend a few years back. I was assigned to shoot the Spec MX-5 race that was going down, but spent the entire day photographing basically everything. Why not? I had all the memory card space in the world, and treated myself to renting a very, very spiffy Canon L lens. The shots turned out great, and the max-300mm zoom helped make up for my lack of access. I’ll post more photos from this day as there are many, but I’m proud of this one for figuring out the decent framing.
