You ever take a walk around a sleeping city at night and snap away? For once, this photo doesn’t have much of a story, and I even forgot about it for a time. Despite the lack of context, this image still speaks hundreds of words to me.

There have been many nights in my life where I saddle up in whatever car I own at the time, get my camera gear and credit card, and drive down to downtown Los Angeles for a quiet walk around a city that sleeps very often. Weekdays after 10 p.m. in DTLA yield mostly empty freeways, and streets that are silent save for the grumbles of massive HVAC units and distant cars. Somehow, those streets become the total sum of your headspace, adding more capacity to think, to reason, to breathe.
One of those many nights where I just needed to get out and walk, I saw this 991.2 911 street parked in front of the Museum of Contemporary Art on Grand Ave, just down the street from the Walt Disney Concert hall, and across the street from The Broad. I usually park around here because the meters are free after 8pm, and it’s walking distance from my favorite downtown spots.
It’s one of the few car photos I’ve taken that takes a narrative on its own; a contemporary Porsche 911 framed the word “contemporary.” Well, maybe not a narrative, but it states what’s going on. We could launch into some absurd art historic explanation and context for the photo, but since I basically forgot that I took this, I think that it brought me straight back to this moment in mid-December 2019, speaks enough words on its own.
