I spend much of my free time sim racing… largely because I don’t have my own race car. That takes time and money that I’m barely building up to so for now, I faff around on my sim wheel setup. When I’m not racing wheel-to-wheel with other virtual racers I sometimes grab a hero car, a good track, and start lapping away. But one nice benefit of digital driving is that you can pause the experience and just admire it once in a while.

Assetto Corsa has a nice selection of unobtanium machinery that is beautifully modeled and acoustically captured, and the Ruf Yellowbird is one of my favorites. There’s a lot of crossover on the car list with cars from legendary car media, and even stronger connections with stuff that I loved growing up. Of course, the Yellowbird was immortalized by Faszination, a short film of the Ruf getting drifted, nay, absolutely caned around the Nürburging.
The name “Yellowbird” is actually just a nickname given to it by Road & Track because of the bright yellow of the 1987 test car and prototype. While that is an incredible nickname, the car was christened as the Ruf CTR which stands for Group C Turbo Ruf.
Hopefully, someone someday will let me drive a Yellowbird in anger. For now, my simulator is as close as I’ll get. And on the subject of sims, here’s another post you might dig: The Best Modern Driving Games for People Who Love Cars.
