Cool car spotting is a great part of the Los Angeles experience. In fact, I’m almost sure it’s an itemized expense on rent bills across the city. Walk anywhere in any direction, and something cool will just appear out of thin air. While Porsche 911 GT2 RS’ may leak out of every building, I feel that the ultimate LA vibe is an old Mercedes-Benz, just like this R107 Mercedes 380 SL of ’70s or ’80s vintage.

I saw this car in Elysian Park while on an evening walk and immediately was struck by the intense vibes of this scene. There is a location in the park called Angel’s Point, where there is another incredible LA viewpoint, and a two-lane park road with parking and a slightly obscured view of the skyline.
I parked my GTI, hopped out, and saw this R107 SL lounging beneath the evening rays, and I couldn’t help but snap a pic with the skyline in the background. All I could see or think of was the mid-’80s of LA history. Smog, old money, Johnnie Cochran, and the buildup to the tumultuous decades that followed them. I imagined myself cruising Wilshire east from Santa Monica, driving away from the sunset in that old SL while choking on pollution fumes. What a time.
