It’s so new and capable that it’s already impressing people on the racetrack.

The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport might have an annoyingly long name, but it’s worth the syllables, as it’s quite a bit more capable than the car it replaces, the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 CS MR.

During SRO GT America qualifying at St. Petersburg, it clocked in a 1:17.763, whereas the fastest lap recorded by last year’s 718 GT4 (why can’t Porsche just call it that?) in the same session was a 1:19.433. Both drivers are top notch, and considering the conditions were the same, a difference of about two seconds is massive.

In fact, the new 718 GT4 was in its own separate class because it’s so new and its capability isn’t fully realized on track just yet. Thus, it’s not yet fully homologated for competition in SRO GT America’s GT4 class. Or, possibly by any racing sanctioning body, because it’s still pretty early in everyone’s racing calendars. Cool stuff, and it’s wild that it’s already so fast compared to its predecessor, and actually every other GT4 car in SRO’s field. Time shall tell how adjustments for classing shall unfold in the 2022 racing season.

  • Peter Nelson took his tuned Mazda 2 to the dyno. These are the results.
  • Chris Rosales spent $8,000 fixing his crashed VW Golf GTI, and it was worth every penny.
  • Take a few minutes to reminisce about Joe Isuzu, a truly bizarre character invented to sell cars with obvious lies.
  • Tested and reviewed: Oculus VR sim racing is truly immersive, but it has its downsides.
  • The new mail truck’s 8.6 MPG fuel economy figure is being taken out of context, Kevin Williams writes. And when the LLV contract is over, the old mail trucks should be converted and recycled.
  • This is a big deal: Proposed REPAIR act protects small auto shops and consumers from OEM monopolies.
